Tut‐06: Assessment and Mitigation of Radiation‐induced Soft Errors in Deep Neural Networks Running in Resource‐constrained IoT Devices

Assessment and Mitigation of Radiation‐induced Soft Errors in Deep Neural Networks Running in Resource‐constrained IoT Devices

ID: Tut-06

Description

The lack of fast and accurate evaluation of performance, accuracy, and reliability is a major design flow bottleneck currently faced by software engineers and IoT designers. This tutorial will provide the academic and industrial research and engineering community with an overview of techniques and a cross-layer approach that enables a fast evaluation of the soft error reliability of different IoT systems, considering different processors, deep neural network (DNN) inference models, and datasets. We will discuss the key challenges, benefits, and impediments of assessing and mitigating the soft error reliability of IoT systems, considering different levels of abstraction, varying from the use of virtual platforms to real neutron radiation experiments. The tutorial will also include a large range of soft error mitigation approaches, ranging from design to lightweight software techniques. To illustrate the relevance of each soft error assessment and mitigation approach, case studies covering safety-critical systems and resource-constraint IoT devices, applications, libraries/APIs, and DNNs characteristics will be discussed.  This tutorial will also present a framework that supports fast and early soft error assessment, diagnosis, and susceptibility reduction evaluation by applying different mitigation techniques and how it could be integrated into future digital engineering to shorten the product development of reliable IoT systems.

Chairs

Luciano Ost, Loughborough University, UK

Luciano Ost is currently an Associate Professor in Embedded Systems at Loughborough University’s Wolfson School - UK. He received his PhD degree in Computer Science from PUCRS, Brazil, in 2010. During his PhD, Dr Ost worked as an invited researcher at the Microelectronic Systems Institute of the Technische Universitaet Darmstadt (from 2007 to 2008) and at the University of York (October 2009). After completing his doctorate, he worked as a research assistant (2 years) and then as an assistant professor (2 years) at the University of Montpellier II in France. He has co-authored and authored two books and more than 90 papers. His research is devoted to advancing hardware and software architectures to improve life-critical and multiprocessing embedded systems' performance, security, and reliability. Dr Ost presented two tutorials (i.e., IEEE ICECS 2021 and ISCAS 2022). He also delivered invited talks and keynotes on various research topics not only at universities (e.g., Berkeley 2018, University of York 2021) but also at Industrial (e.g., Arm Research Summit 2018), research conferences (e.g., International Embedded Systems Symposium 2019) and Webinars.
